What's the Purpose of a Console Table?

Console tables are great pieces of furniture that can be used in a variety of ways throughout your home. They're usually thin tables that are placed against a wall; some also have integrated shelves or drawers. You can place a console table in several different places in your home. In this article, we discuss the purpose of console tables and some places where they can be used in your home. 

In the hallway

A console table works really well in the hallway to provide a place to put your belongings and to add some extra decoration to the entrance of your home. Console tables are usually slim enough to be placed against a wall and leave enough space for you to walk comfortably through the hallway. Console tables in the hallway can hold your keys, wallet and other items you need to find before you rush out the door. Try putting a piece of art above your console table to make a statement to your guests as they enter your home. If your hallway needs some extra light, you can replace the artwork with a mirror. Some people choose to place shoe racks under console tables in the hallway so you can find your shoes easily when heading out of the door.

In your bedroom

Console tables can also work well in the bedroom. They're an alternative solution to a vanity table and chairs. Place a mirror above the console table and use the surface to store makeup, jewelery and any perfumes you use daily. For the bedroom, console tables with drawers work well, so you can quickly clear all of these things away when they're not in use. You can also place some photos or ornamental items on top of the console table in your bedroom. 

In the bathroom

A console table can be a good solution if you have minimal storage in your bathroom. They're slender and fit closely to the wall, and many contain shelves or drawers for storage. You can place clean towels on the shelves and spare toiletries in the drawers to keep them out of sight. If your bathroom has enough space, a console table can be a great addition that makes the space more practical and elegant. 

In the dining room

The main piece of furniture in your dining room is usually your dining table. However, around the edge, you might need additional furniture for storage. Oak console tables look great in any dining room, especially if you have a matching oak dining table. You can store your special plates, glasses and bowls on the console table when you're not using them, freeing up space for your everyday items in the kitchen. In addition, a console table in the dining room gives you the opportunity to add more lighting and decoration. A lamp and a vase of flowers can look great and create an inviting atmosphere for your dining room.  

In the lounge

If you have a lounge with floor-to-ceiling windows or a glass patio door, it can be hard to find places to add personal items you want to display. A console that's pushed up against a wall can give you this space without needing to put up shelving and risk damaging the walls. A console table in a lounge decorated with flowers and photographs can make a house feel like a home. In addition, you can use the drawers in the console table to store any items you don't want on show in your living room. 

The hallway is the classic place to place a console table in any home. However, there are many other places where a console table can work both practically and aesthetically. Take a look around your house. Are there any places that could do with a bit of decoration and additional storage? Your office may need an extra surface to keep documents and embellishments, or does your conservatory have a bare wall? You can use a console table in almost any room as long as you choose the right material and style that matches that space. Avoid cluttering the top with too many items to keep your console table looking great.
